The Phifer blackout that railroads, for the widest openingsTier 3

SheerWeave 7001 is Phifer's 100% polyester blackout in Crestron's Designer Collection, Tier 3, with a published Tv of 0 in every colourway: no light through the cloth. What earns it a place beside the other two Phifer blackouts is what Crestron allows with it. 7001 is the only one of the three that can be railroaded and seamed, so a shade wider than the 116-inch roll is made with the cloth turned 90 degrees, and one that is also taller than 116 inches takes a seam. It is offered with all four Crestron hembars, the Designer Half-Wrap among them. Phifer's own data is on our Phifer SheerWeave 7001 page.

Eleven colourways, in Crestron's code order S50 to S60: White, Birch, Sand, Merino, Mushroom, Canvas, Cocoa, Graphite, Onyx, Canyon and Porpoise. Crestron publishes solar figures for White and Cocoa, the same for both, Ts 0, Rs 71 and As 29: nothing transmitted and close to three quarters of the sun's energy reflected at the glass. Crestron's guide lists GREENGUARD, PVC free and lead free for it, and 7001 is the only Phifer blackout in this library to carry the lead-free line, which matters on a fabric schedule that asks for one. Every colourway sits at Tier 3, one column to the right of 7500 and 7400 on the budget grid on this page.

Woven by Phifer; the mill's full data is on our Phifer SheerWeave 7001 page.

Best Use & Limits

What SheerWeave 7001 does on your glass, and what it does not

Best use

Openings too wide for one shade in the other Phifer blackouts: a bedroom whose slider wall runs past the roll, a family room that doubles as a screening room at night. Onyx or Graphite where a projector runs, White, Birch or Sand in a bedroom. If a screen goes in front, pick one that railroads too, E Screen for instance, so both layers cross the glass in one piece.

Privacy

Complete through the cloth at every hour, and one railroaded shade simplifies the edges: across a wide opening it leaves light at two sides, where two shades on one line add a third slot at the joint. Side channels with the Exposed Blackout hembar close the sides. The cloth is not dual sided, so the street sees its back; that changes the look from outside, not the cover.

Glare control

None through the cloth, which is right for a screening room and wrong for most living rooms. A client who asks for a blackout to stop afternoon glare on a television usually needs a tight, dark solar screen instead, which takes the glare and keeps the view; 7001 then goes behind it on a dual roller for the night. Hung alone, it leaves the room bright or dark, with nothing in between.

Limitations

No view and no daylight, and the sun's heat it stops stays at the glass, so the window bay behind a closed shade on west glass heats up. The Designer Half-Wrap and a sealed room are a choice, not a pair: Crestron details full blackout with side channels and the Exposed Blackout hembar, so a shade built that way gives up the fabric-wrapped bar. Weigh that before the Half-Wrap decides the fabric.

Ts = solar energy transmitted, Rs = solar energy reflected, As = solar energy absorbed and Tv = visible light transmitted, in percent, as Crestron publishes them in its fabric shop and its Fabric Information Guide (revision 3.23.26) for each colourway; Ts, Rs and As add up to 100. Openness is Crestron's figure; width is the usable roll width. We bring samples of the colours you shortlist to the consultation.

The guide excludes control processors, keypads, interfaces, wiring, power supplies, programming and installation. Source (PDF).

Figures are Crestron's own budgetary MSRP guide of June 2022 for one motorized 5 Series roller shade, motor included, before options. They exclude the control system, wiring, power, programming and installation, and Crestron may have changed them since. We quote every project at the measure.

Where SheerWeave 7001 works here

7001 is the fabric for the 12-foot slider walls on the ocean side of Sunny Isles Beach, Bal Harbour and Fort Lauderdale beach, where a living room wants one blackout across the glass rather than two on a line. Railroaded, it runs on the QMT5 hardware, whose 275 motor Crestron rates to 168 inches on its sizing charts for width, height and fabric weight, and if one shade in the room is railroaded we railroad them all, as Crestron recommends. In a Boca Raton media room it hangs alone in side channels, with nothing in front of it.

SheerWeave 7001 is the Phifer blackout that railroads and seams and takes every Crestron hembar; SheerWeave 7500 and 7400 are the dual-sided Tier 2 cloths held to 116 inches, Dilanna the Coulisse blackout with the same railroading freedom at 110 inches, and Flocke the Mermet fiberglass blackout at 93 inches.

Good to Know

SheerWeave 7001: frequently asked

When does a 7001 shade need a seam?

When it is bigger than the roll in both directions. Railroading turns the cloth so the 116-inch roll width becomes the height limit: a shade 150 inches wide and 100 inches tall runs in one piece, the same width at 130 inches tall needs a seam. Crestron's guidance, and ours, is to set the seam on a mullion so the line reads as part of the window. On a blackout a seam shows in daylight, so we lay out the alternative, two shades on one line, before deciding.

What does Tier 3 buy over the Tier 2 Phifer blackouts?

Width in one piece, and the hembar. 7001 is the Phifer blackout Crestron railroads and seams, so it covers in one shade an opening that would take two in 7500 or 7400, and it is offered with the Designer Half-Wrap, the fabric-wrapped hembar with no weld line, which 7500 is not. The budget grid on this page shows the Tier 3 column beside the others; where the opening fits one shade and the bottom bar hides in a pocket, the Tier 2 cloths do the same job.

What does a Crestron shade in SheerWeave 7001 cost?

Crestron places this fabric in price Tier 3. Its budgetary guide of June 2022 lists a motorized 5 Series roller shade in a Tier 3 fabric at $1,200 for 3 ft x 5 ft, $1,600 for 5 ft x 10 ft and $2,000 for 10 ft x 10 ft, MSRP, motor included, before options, control, wiring and installation. Options, the control system, wiring and installation are on top; we quote the finished shade at the measure.

How wide can a Crestron shade in SheerWeave 7001 be?

Crestron lists a usable roll width of 116 inches for SheerWeave 7001; the fabric can be railroaded, turned 90 degrees on the roll, so one shade can run wider than the roll as long as it is no taller than the roll width, and where it is taller Crestron joins two widths with a horizontal seam, which we line up with a mullion or a transom. We confirm the limit for the chosen hardware when we measure.

Is Crestron SheerWeave 7001 the same fabric as the mill's?

Crestron buys SheerWeave 7001 from Phifer and lists it under its own SKUs and price tier. The weave is the one on our Phifer SheerWeave 7001 page, where the mill's full optical and fire data lives; Crestron's page here shows the colourways and openness Crestron actually stocks for its shades.
