The Mermet blackout with a cotton-flocked back, colour-matched to VizelaTier 4

Flocke is the Mermet blackout of the Crestron Designer Collection: a cloth of fiberglass and acrylic with a cotton-flocked backing and no PVC, the one Mermet blackout in the Crestron programme and the only blackout Crestron files at Tier 4, the top column of the budget grid on this page. It passes no light through the material; Crestron publishes a visible transmittance of 0 for every colourway. What it does not do on its own is seal the edges, which is why Crestron says to add side channels and the Exposed Blackout hembar for a complete blackout, and why we detail the mount before the fabric on any bedroom that has to be dark.

The card is five colours, Blanc, Sahel, Mississippi, Chartreux and Loutre, the same five names as Vizela, the Mermet light-filtering weave, so one room can run Vizela by day and Flocke by night in a single colour on a dual roller. The colour decides what happens to the heat at the glass: Blanc reflects 75% of the solar energy that reaches it and absorbs 25%, Sahel and Mississippi reflect 68%, Chartreux 48%, and Loutre reflects 28% and absorbs 72%. Crestron lists every colourway as dual sided, so the back of the roll can face the room on an open mount, and allows railroading and seaming, which is what makes a 93-inch roll workable on a wide slider.

Woven by Mermet; the mill's full data is on our Mermet Flocke page.

Best Use & Limits

What Flocke does on your glass, and what it does not

Best use

Bedrooms first, and any Crestron room that has to go dark: a primary suite on the ocean, a nursery, a media room where the screen is watched by day. It is the blackout for a project that wants fiberglass and no PVC behind its solar screens, and for a house already running Vizela, where the same colour name carries across. Blanc or Sahel on unshaded glass; Loutre where a dark shade is wanted.

Privacy

Complete in both directions and at every hour, because nothing passes the cloth: no shadow, no outline, no lamp showing through. The only thing that can be seen after dark is the sliver of light around the edge of an inside mount, and that is light leaking past the shade, not a view into the room. Channels or an overlapping outside mount deal with it; the colour of the fabric does not change it.

Glare control

None, because none of the sun gets through: with Flocke down the window is gone, which is what a projector room or a bedroom at dawn wants and what a living room by day does not. That is why it lives on the second tube of a dual roller, behind a solar screen that handles the daytime, and comes down only when the room needs to be dark rather than dim.

Limitations

No daylight and no view while it is down, and nothing in between: the room is bright with the shade up or dark with it down, which is why a bedroom pairs it with a screen or a light-filtering layer on a dual roller. On unshaded glass Loutre, which absorbs the most solar energy, warms at the window where Blanc stays cooler. A coated blackout can show pinholes or fold marks until it has hung.

Options in the same guide: fascia $20 per ft; top and back cover $20 per ft; pocket $50 per ft; dual shade (two fabrics, one bracket) double the single-shade figure. The guide names example fabrics per tier: Tier 1: Bella, Mika, Merinda, Nava; Tier 2: E Screen, SheerWeave 2500, 2700 and 7500, Perla, Dilanna; Tier 3: SheerWeave 7000, Rachel, Nohea, Cosima; Tier 4: Flocke, Vizela, Harika; a few have changed tier since, and every fabric page gives the tier the Crestron fabric shop lists today. The guide excludes control processors, keypads, interfaces, wiring, power supplies, programming and installation. Source (PDF).

Figures are Crestron's own budgetary MSRP guide of June 2022 for one motorized 5 Series roller shade, motor included, before options. They exclude the control system, wiring, power, programming and installation, and Crestron may have changed them since. We quote every project at the measure.

Where Flocke works here

Flocke is the blackout we put behind a Crestron solar screen in an oceanfront bedroom from Sunny Isles to Boca Raton, on a dual roller with E Screen or M Screen in front, or behind Vizela where the room wants a soft daytime layer in the same colour. Blanc goes on a condo facade where the association wants a pale colour to the street and the figures favour it on hot glass; Loutre where a dark shade is wanted. We size the motor for the weight of the cloth first.

Flocke is the fiberglass and acrylic blackout with a cotton-flocked back, dual sided, railroaded and seamed, at Tier 4 on a 93-inch roll; the Phifer SheerWeave 7001, 7400 and 7500 blackouts are polyester at Tier 2 and 3 on 116-inch rolls, and the Coulisse Cosima and Dilanna are 110-inch polyester blackouts at Tier 2.

Good to Know

Flocke: frequently asked

How do you cover a slider wider than 93 inches with Flocke?

By turning the fabric. Crestron allows Flocke to be railroaded, so the cloth runs sideways off the roll and the width of the shade is no longer limited by the roll; its height is, at 93 inches. A shade both wider and taller than that takes one seam, which Crestron allows on Flocke and which we place on a mullion, or becomes two shades on one line. Crestron's own advice, which we follow, is that if one shade in a room is railroaded, every shade in that room should be.

Which hembar goes on a Flocke shade?

Crestron allows all four on Flocke. For a bedroom that must be dark, the Exposed Blackout hembar with side channels is what Crestron recommends for a complete blackout and what we detail where the pocket or jamb gives the depth. Where Flocke rides behind a solar screen on a dual roller and only comes down at night, the Open Pocket or Sealed Pocket hembar is enough. The Designer Half-Wrap, the rail wrapped in the shade's own cloth, suits a Flocke shade hung alone with its bottom edge showing.

Can Flocke hang on an open Decor mount?

Yes. Crestron lists all five colourways as dual sided, and an open-roll Decor mount needs exactly that, because the back of the roll faces the room and there is no fascia to hide it. A single Flocke shade on Decor hardware suits a media room or a loft bedroom where the roll is meant to show; where the same room wants a daytime layer as well, the dual bracket is an Architectural hardware item, with the screen in front.

What does a Crestron shade in Flocke cost?

Crestron places this fabric in price Tier 4. Its budgetary guide of June 2022 lists a motorized 5 Series roller shade in a Tier 4 fabric at $1,400 for 3 ft x 5 ft, $2,200 for 5 ft x 10 ft and $3,200 for 10 ft x 10 ft, MSRP, motor included, before options, control, wiring and installation. Options, the control system, wiring and installation are on top; we quote the finished shade at the measure.

How wide can a Crestron shade in Flocke be?

Crestron lists a usable roll width of 93 inches for Flocke; the fabric can be railroaded, turned 90 degrees on the roll, so one shade can run wider than the roll as long as it is no taller than the roll width, and where it is taller Crestron joins two widths with a horizontal seam, which we line up with a mullion or a transom. We confirm the limit for the chosen hardware when we measure.

Is Crestron Flocke the same fabric as the mill's?

Crestron buys Flocke from Mermet and lists it under its own SKUs and price tier. The weave is the one on our Mermet Flocke page, where the mill's full optical and fire data lives; Crestron's page here shows the colourways and openness Crestron actually stocks for its shades.
