Crestron Fabric Library

The PVC-free fiberglass light-filtering weave, with a blackout twinTier 3

Vizela is the light-filtering fabric of the Crestron programme for a project that wants fiberglass rather than polyester: a fiberglass yarn with an EVA coating and no PVC, woven by Mermet and filed by Crestron in the Designer Collection at Tier 3, the third column of the budget grid on this page. It is a light-filtering cloth in Crestron's sense: it passes diffused daylight and shows the outside as silhouettes and shadows rather than as a view, at 1% openness. That makes it a daytime privacy fabric for a bathroom, a street-facing bedroom or a corridor, and a shade that keeps a room bright where the glass has nothing to look at. It is neither a blackout nor a screen.

The card is five colours at one openness, five colourways: Blanc, Sahel, Mississippi, Chartreux and Loutre, the same five names as Flocke, the Mermet blackout in the same Designer Collection, so a dual roller can carry Vizela by day and Flocke by night in one colour. The figures spread wide for a light-filtering cloth. Blanc passes 36% of the solar energy that reaches it and reflects 59%; Sahel and Mississippi pass 33% and reflect 52% to 53%; Chartreux passes 23% and absorbs 40%; Loutre passes 12% and absorbs 67%. Crestron's visible transmittance runs from 10% to 37% across the five, so the card covers a bright shade and a much quieter one.

Woven by Mermet; the mill's full data is on our Mermet Vizela page.

Best Use & Limits

What Vizela does on your glass, and what it does not

Best use

A bathroom, a stair landing, a guest bedroom facing a courtyard or a neighbour, a home office where the glass looks at a wall: rooms that want daylight and daytime cover and have no view to keep. Blanc, Sahel or Mississippi where the room should stay bright; Chartreux or Loutre where it should stay quiet or the glass faces west. Where a specification asks for fiberglass and no PVC, it is the light-filtering answer.

Privacy

Full by day: nobody sees in through a light-filtering cloth while it is brighter outside than in. After dark it reverses: with the lights on, anyone outside sees silhouettes and movement through it, more sharply through Blanc than through Loutre. That is enough for an upstairs bathroom and not enough for a ground-floor bedroom, which gets Flocke behind it in the matching colour on a dual roller.

Glare control

Direct sun becomes a lit panel of cloth rather than a beam across the floor, and the panel's brightness follows the colour. Loutre, which passes the least solar energy of the five, takes a west window down to a soft light a monitor can live with; Blanc, which passes the most, can itself be too bright across from a screen. Where glare is the main complaint, choose from the dark end of the card.

Limitations

No view out, no night privacy on its own and no room darkening: a lit room shows silhouettes after dark and a bedroom is not dark at dawn. One shade is limited to the roll width, because Crestron does not railroad or seam Vizela, so a slider wall becomes two shades on one line. A light-filtering coating can show pinholes and fold marks until it has hung, and the cloth does little for sound.

What It Costs

What a Crestron shade in Vizela costs

Crestron places this fabric in price Tier 3. Its budgetary guide of June 2022 lists a motorized 5 Series roller shade in a Tier 3 fabric at $1,200 for 3 ft x 5 ft, $1,600 for 5 ft x 10 ft and $2,000 for 10 ft x 10 ft, MSRP, motor included, before options, control, wiring and installation.

Options in the same guide: fascia $20 per ft; top and back cover $20 per ft; pocket $50 per ft; dual shade (two fabrics, one bracket) double the single-shade figure. The guide names example fabrics per tier: Tier 1: Bella, Mika, Merinda, Nava; Tier 2: E Screen, SheerWeave 2500, 2700 and 7500, Perla, Dilanna; Tier 3: SheerWeave 7000, Rachel, Nohea, Cosima; Tier 4: Flocke, Vizela, Harika; a few have changed tier since, and every fabric page gives the tier the Crestron fabric shop lists today. The guide excludes control processors, keypads, interfaces, wiring, power supplies, programming and installation. Source (PDF).

Figures are Crestron's own budgetary MSRP guide of June 2022 for one motorized 5 Series roller shade, motor included, before options. They exclude the control system, wiring, power, programming and installation, and Crestron may have changed them since. We quote every project at the measure.

South Florida

Where Vizela works here

Vizela suits the rooms of a South Florida house where daylight and daytime privacy have to come from one shade: a bathroom on the street side, a guest bedroom on a courtyard, a home office facing a neighbour. It is the light-filtering fabric we specify for an association or commercial job that asks for fiberglass and no PVC, and we pair it with Flocke behind it on a dual roller wherever the room is slept in. On a slider wall the 92-inch roll is the first check.

Vizela is the fiberglass, PVC-free light-filtering weave at Tier 3 with Flocke as its blackout twin; SheerWeave 7450 is the wider polyester light-filtering fabric at Tier 2, and the Coulisse Bella, Mika, Nava and Merinda cards pair a light-filtering and a blackout version of each colour in polyester at Tier 1 to 3.

Good to Know

Vizela: frequently asked

Can I see out through Vizela?

No, and that is the point of a light-filtering fabric. At 1% openness the weave passes diffused daylight and shows the outside as silhouettes and shadows, a tree, a passing figure, the change from day to dusk, not the water. Where a room has a view to keep, the answer is a solar screen, E Screen or M Screen at 3% or 5%, on the same Crestron hardware; Vizela belongs on the glass where the view is a wall, a walkway or a neighbour.

Vizela or SheerWeave 7450 for a light-filtering Crestron shade?

Both are light-filtering, PVC free and in the Designer Collection; then they part. SheerWeave 7450 is a Phifer polyester with an acrylic coating, 116 inches wide, eight colours, Tier 2; Vizela is fiberglass with an EVA coating, 92 inches, five colours, Tier 3, and Crestron's Fabric Information Guide lists Vizela as fire retardant where it does not list 7450 that way. For a wide residential window 7450 is the easier fit; for a condo common area, a clinic or a specification asking for fiberglass and a fire rating, Vizela.

Can Vizela and Flocke share one dual roller?

Yes; that is how we specify a bedroom in it. Vizela sits on the front tube for the day and Flocke on the back tube for the night, on one Crestron dual bracket, in the same colour name: Blanc with Blanc, Loutre with Loutre. The rolls are a close match at 92 and 93 inches; Flocke can be railroaded and Vizela cannot, so the pair is limited to the Vizela roll. The two sit in different columns of the budget grid, Vizela at Tier 3 and Flocke at Tier 4.

What does a Crestron shade in Vizela cost?

Crestron places this fabric in price Tier 3. Its budgetary guide of June 2022 lists a motorized 5 Series roller shade in a Tier 3 fabric at $1,200 for 3 ft x 5 ft, $1,600 for 5 ft x 10 ft and $2,000 for 10 ft x 10 ft, MSRP, motor included, before options, control, wiring and installation. Options, the control system, wiring and installation are on top; we quote the finished shade at the measure.

How wide can a Crestron shade in Vizela be?

Crestron lists a usable roll width of 92 inches for Vizela; it is not railroaded, so an opening wider than the roll takes two shades side by side, coupled on one bracket with the light gap set at a mullion. We confirm the limit for the chosen hardware when we measure.

Is Crestron Vizela the same fabric as the mill's?

Crestron buys Vizela from Mermet and lists it under its own SKUs and price tier. The weave is the one on our Mermet Vizela page, where the mill's full optical and fire data lives; Crestron's page here shows the colourways and openness Crestron actually stocks for its shades.
