Crestron Vail Fabric
10 colourways, light dimming / translucent, Crestron Tier 4. Every swatch and every figure Crestron publishes, from the Crestron-certified team in Fort Lauderdale that specifies and installs Crestron shades from Miami to Palm Beach.
The horizontal sheer that keeps one colour across both opacitiesTier 4
Vail is the horizontal sheer card to choose when a whole floor should carry one colour. It dresses the Crestron Horizontal Sheer Shade, where 3-inch fabric vanes sit between a front and a back layer of sheer. Turned open, the vanes leave about 1.5 inches of view between neighbouring vanes, by Crestron's spec sheet; turned shut, they overlap and the window reads as one closed panel. Five colours, Desert Sands, Pearl Gray, Moonstruck, Graphite and Volcanic Ash, are each made translucent and light-dimming, ten colourways in all, and all ten sit in Tier 4 of the budget grid on this page, as every horizontal sheer fabric does.
That pairing is the difference from Keystone, where most colours come one way only. On Vail the opacity follows the room and the colour stays: translucent Pearl Gray where the vanes stand open through the day, light-dimming Pearl Gray in the bedroom next door, where they close at night. Light-dimming holds back more light than translucent, but Crestron does not call it a blackout, and neither do we. Identical shades ordered together can have their vanes aligned to within a quarter inch on request, which is what keeps a row of Vail windows reading as one.
What Vail does on your glass, and what it does not
Best use
A home that wants one colour name across rooms that do different jobs: the translucent version in the living and dining rooms, where the vanes stay open for the view, and the light-dimming version in the bedrooms and the study. Choose the colour once and let the opacity change from room to room. For a single room with no partner, the shorter Telluride card may be all a project needs.
Privacy
In a condo that faces another tower, the sightline in is level with the glass, and closed vanes shut it by day and after dark, their overlap holding even at the foot of the shade, where Crestron says they do not close tightly. Open, they give the view back and some of the room with it, so they are closed at dusk. The light-dimming version gives away less of a lit room.
Glare control
Glare is settled room by room rather than colour by colour: a west-facing family room with a television takes the light-dimming version, a shaded dining room the translucent one, and both keep the same name. With the vanes open, the sheer layers soften direct sun rather than stop it. With no published visible transmission figure to compare, we hold both versions of your colour at the window at the hour the sun is worst.
Limitations
A bedroom for late sleepers still needs a separate blackout shade: light-dimming dims the room, it does not black it out. Crestron builds the horizontal sheer up to 119.5 inches wide and 96 inches high, depending on fabric, so a wider opening takes two shades side by side. Care is dry: a duster, a low-suction vacuum or cool air, and the light-dimming colourways cannot be cleaned ultrasonically.
Vail colourways
5 colours, 10 colourways. Crestron Tier 4.
Colourways
Every Vail colourway, with Crestron's published figures
Ts = solar energy transmitted, Rs = solar energy reflected, As = solar energy absorbed and Tv = visible light transmitted, in percent, as Crestron publishes them in its fabric shop and its Fabric Information Guide (revision 3.23.26) for each colourway; Ts, Rs and As add up to 100. Openness is Crestron's figure; width is the usable roll width. We bring samples of the colours you shortlist to the consultation.
What a Crestron horizontal sheer in Vail costs
Crestron places every Vail colourway in price Tier 4. Its budgetary guide of June 2022 prices roller shades only and gives no figure for the Horizontal Sheer Shade, so we do not print one here: we quote the finished shade at the measure, with the fascia, the motor or the manual clutch, and the control.
Where Vail works here
Vail suits the South Florida condo that wants one colour name at every window: a Brickell or Edgewater apartment whose living room and bedrooms share a wall of glass, a Palm Beach townhouse facing the street on every floor. Every opening is measured to its exact height, with none of the margin a roller is given. Crestron also notes that the fabric ages sooner when an open window lets in salt air and rain, so on the water we keep Vail off the slider the family leaves open.
Against Keystone, Vail trades colours for continuity: five names to Keystone's nine, but every one in both opacities; Telluride keeps the same pairing across three colours, and Sena is the Tier 2 Coulisse sheer that hangs flat on a roller, a view through the cloth with no vanes to close.
Vail: frequently asked
Can one Vail colour be translucent in the living room and light-dimming in the bedroom?
Yes, and that is the reason to choose Vail over Keystone. Each of the five colours is made in both versions, so the living room can take the translucent shade and the bedroom the light-dimming one under the same name, and the house keeps one colour name throughout. We bring both versions of your shortlist to the consultation, because the difference between them is best judged against your own glass with the sun on it.
Can a Vail shade be manual now and motorized later?
Yes. Crestron offers the horizontal sheer with a manual clutch and a beaded chain, and the clutch can be upgraded to a motor later: the CSM-QMTDC-163-1 Digital QMT motor on QMT3 Architectural hardware, wired on Cresnet or wireless on infiNET EX. If a motor is likely, plan for it before the walls close, so a cable or a power lead is waiting at the window; our pre-wiring guide lists what the electrician needs.
