Couture tweed, 53 in wide, in 5 colourways

Mad Hatter is one of the Holland & Sherry cloths we make up as draperies: a couture tweed in their Linen Weaves collection (48% wool, 27% cotton, 12% linen, 9% acrylic, 4% polyester, 53 in wide, made in the UK). The range runs to 5 colourways: White Lace, Champagne, Gamay Red, Navy and Graphite. Their spec sheet gives its end use as "Light upholstery, drapery, wall upholstery, soft goods, and accessories". It is new in their Fall 2026 collection.

The 53 in width runs up the roll, so panels are made of joined widths and the seams fall inside the pleats. Holland & Sherry's sheet gives the direction as up the roll. Holland & Sherry give the repeat as 1.7 in across, 1.8 in down; we match it across every seam and from window to window, which adds yardage and is figured into the order.

Wool brings weight, a soft hand and quiet, and it resists flame on its own; what it does not resist is the sun, which fades and weakens it, so it wants a lining and, on bright south and west glass, a shade in front of it. In a lived-in, air-conditioned house it is at home; in a house shut up for the summer, humidity is its risk (curtain fabric types). It weighs 20 oz per linear yard (650 g per linear metre) by Holland & Sherry's figures.

Their drapery note advises hanging the drapery before it is hemmed, so the cloth settles to the room, and lining every drapery, to block the light and protect the face.

Best Use & Limits

What Mad Hatter does at the window, and what it does not

Best use

Mad Hatter is a tailored drapery cloth: pinch pleat, Euro pleat or ripplefold panels in a study, a bedroom or a living room, lined, on a decorative rod or a track.

Light and privacy

Closed, Mad Hatter gives full privacy; how much light comes through is decided by the lining we sew behind it: light-filtering for living rooms, interlining for body and quiet, blackout for bedrooms (the lining guide).

Cloth and care

48% wool, 27% cotton, 12% linen, 9% acrylic, 4% polyester; 20 oz per linear yard (650 g per linear metre); Martindale 30,000 rubs. Care, by Holland & Sherry's sheet: professional dry clean only.

Limitations

Not for unshaded south or west glass on its own: the sun fades natural fibres, so a shade goes in front of it there. At 53 in a wide panel is made of joined widths, and the repeat is matched at every seam, which costs yardage. No NFPA 701 result in Holland & Sherry's data, so a condo common area or a commercial job that asks for it needs the cloth flame treated with a certificate, if Holland & Sherry can supply it that way, or another cloth.

What Holland & Sherry say about Mad Hatter

End use, in their words

"Light upholstery, drapery, wall upholstery, soft goods, and accessories", from Holland & Sherry's spec sheet.

Their drapery note

The cloth is made from natural fibres; drapery should hang before it is hemmed, so it can adjust to the climate of the room; every drapery should be lined, to block light and protect the face.

Fabric direction

Holland & Sherry's sheet gives the direction as up the roll.

Flame tests

NFPA 701, the drapery flame test: not listed; upholstery tests on the sheet: BS 5852 Cigarette & Match Cigarette Pass, Match Fail; Cal 117-2013 Pass.

Colour names, codes, colour families, widths, compositions, repeats, weights and origin are Holland & Sherry's own, from their product page for each colourway, read on October 7, 2026. The photographs are theirs and stay on their site: each row links to it. Your designer confirms the colour and the dye lot with Holland & Sherry when the cloth is ordered.

Working With Holland & Sherry

How Mad Hatter becomes draperies in your home

Your designer specifies

Holland & Sherry sell to the trade, so the cloth is chosen and ordered by your designer, with the colour code and the sample in hand. Not working with a designer? Tell us; we can suggest a cloth we order ourselves.

We measure and give the yardage

We measure the windows, settle the style, the fullness and the lining, and work out the yardage on the width and the repeat, so the order to Holland & Sherry is right the first time.

We make and install

The cloth comes to our Fort Lauderdale workroom, where our five in-house seamstresses cut and sew the draperies, and our own installers hang them on the rod, track or motorized system the window calls for.

Where Mad Hatter works here

We have made Holland & Sherry wool up before: at the Ritz-Carlton Residences Miami Beach the designer's schedule called for two Holland & Sherry wool jacquards, made up as blackout drapery on Lutron Sivoia QS tracks, the reversible flannel hung with its lighter face outward as specified. Mad Hatter would be made the same way: lined, for an air-conditioned room, with a shade in front of it on bright glass.

For the same use, compare Mad Hatter with Mariposa (linen wool texture, 58 in, 5 colourways), Virtuoso (cotton velvet, 55 in, 32 colourways) and Kennett (linen horse hair weave, 61 in, 8 colourways).

Good to Know

Mad Hatter: frequently asked

How many colours does Holland & Sherry Mad Hatter come in?

5 colourways on Holland & Sherry's site when we read it on October 7, 2026: White Lace, Champagne, Gamay Red, Navy and Graphite. Every one is listed on this page with its code; Holland & Sherry's photographs of each are on their own site, linked from the table.

Can I buy Mad Hatter from you?

No. Holland & Sherry sell to the trade, so your designer orders the cloth from them. We make it up and install it: we measure and work out the yardage, the cloth is sent to our Fort Lauderdale workroom, and our seamstresses cut and sew the draperies.

Will Mad Hatter need seams?

Yes on most windows: at 53 in it runs up the roll, so a panel wider than one width is made of joined widths, with the seams hidden inside the pleats and the repeat matched at each seam.

Do you match the Mad Hatter repeat?

Always. Holland & Sherry give the repeat as 1.7 in across, 1.8 in down; we match it at every seam and from window to window, so the yardage your designer orders is worked out on the repeat.

What does Mad Hatter cost made up as draperies?

The cloth is bought through your designer at Holland & Sherry's price, so our quote covers what we make and install: the fabrication, the lining, the track or rod and the installation, worked out from the measure. Ask for a workroom price with the button above and we come back with a figure, not a range.
