Light-filtering pleated shades for smaller windows, in 36 colours from bright to very dim
Orient Pleated is the light-filtering pleated shade fabric from TOP Window Covering: polyester with an acrylic coating, folded into a 20 mm pleat, about three quarters of an inch, and sold on a 238 cm roll (93.7 inches). Made up, it is one layer of folded cloth, not a honeycomb cell, that hides the room and fills it with even, diffused daylight. The fine pleat suits ordinary windows and French doors better than a wall of glass. The card is the longest in TOP's pleated range, 36 colours, from Ice White, White and Antique White through Sand and Nougat to Terracotta, Dark Blue and Argan Blue.
Choose by the figures rather than the names, because TOP publishes visible light transmission (Tv) for every colour and the spread runs from 1 to 34 percent. Ice White at 34 keeps a room bright. White and Antique White at 15 give soft daylight and reflect 72 percent of the sun's energy back through the glass, the most on the card. Cool and Pure Gray, at 4, make a room very dim and even. The trade-off is construction: none of them is a blackout, and the lift cords pass through a small hole in every pleat, which shows as a pinpoint of light.
What Orient Pleated does on your glass, and what it does not
Best use
Smaller windows in rooms that want daylight without an outlook: a home office, a guest room, a bathroom, a kitchen, a laundry, a hallway, a pair of French doors. Pick by the figures: Ice White for a bright room, White or Antique White for soft light with the most heat turned back, Neutral Gray or Argan Blue for a dim, calm room. A bedroom that has to go dark needs a different shade.
Privacy
By day it hides the room in every colour, because a light-filtering pleat leaves no view in. After dark, with lamps on, the shade glows and anyone close to it shows as a silhouette, fainter through the dim colours. The cord holes add pinpoints of light. Where night privacy has to be complete, a blackout shade is the answer, not a darker pleat.
Glare control
Direct sun arrives as an even glow, with no view and no sun disc, which suits a desk or a television better than an open weave does. In the dim colours, at Tv 1 to 6, a monitor stays readable through the afternoon. Ice White at 34 turns into a bright panel on a sunny window, so a room with a screen facing the glass takes a darker colour.
Limitations
It will not darken a room: no colour on the card is a blackout, and light passes the cord holes even at Tv 1. As a single folded layer it holds no insulating air the way a honeycomb cell does, so it shades hot glass without slowing heat through it. TOP lists no fire rating. For a bedroom, a nursery or a west room the air conditioning fights, choose a TOP honeycomb.

Which Orient Pleated colours make a room dimmest?
Read the figures, not the names. Light Blue publishes Tv 1, Argan Blue 2, Neutral Gray 3, and Cool, Pure Gray and Dark Blue 4, all dimmer than Dark Gray at 6. These make a room dim and even by day. None is a blackout: light still shows at the cord holes and around the edges, so a bedroom that has to be dark needs a blackout honeycomb or roller.
Can Orient Pleated go in a bathroom?
Yes. TOP lists it as suitable for humid environments, and a light-filtering pleat hides the room by day in every colour. At night, with the light on, a person close to the shade shows as a silhouette and the cord holes show as pinpoints. On a bathroom window over a walkway, pick one of the dimmest colours, or use a blackout honeycomb where night privacy has to be complete.
