A see-through pleat for day rooms that keep their view, in fourteen colours
Orient Transparent Pleated is the see-through fabric in TOP Window Covering's pleated range: a heat-set polyester folded into a 20 mm pleat, about three quarters of an inch, and sold on a 238 cm roll. Made up as a pleated shade it is a single layer of crisp folds, not a honeycomb cell, and TOP classes the cloth as transparent, so the garden or the street stays visible through it by day. Fourteen colours run from Ice White and Optical White through Sand Dollar and Drizzle to Thrush, Neutral Gray and Cool. It is a shade for rooms that want the window softened rather than covered.
TOP publishes figures for every colour, and the spread is wide. Ice White and Beige pass 53 and 51 percent of the visible light and about half of the sun's energy, so they brighten a room and do little about heat. Cool, at Tv 7, and Neutral Gray, at 11, take the light down furthest and, being dark, give the clearest view out. Silver Fern absorbs 57 percent of the solar energy, the most on the card. The honest trade-off is the night: with lamps on this fabric hides nothing, so a room used after dark needs a second treatment.
What Orient Transparent Pleated does on your glass, and what it does not
Best use
Small and medium windows where the outlook is pleasant and close neighbors are not: a kitchen over a garden, a breakfast nook, a stair, French doors onto a shaded patio, a guest room used now and then. Take Ice White or Optical White to keep the room bright, Cool or Neutral Gray where the view out matters more than the glow. For big glass, choose the roller version.
Privacy
Some softening by day, none at night. In daylight the sunlit folds veil the room, the pale colours most, but shapes and movement near the glass still read from outside. After dark, with lamps on, the room is in view through every colour. For night privacy add a blackout drapery over it, or a blackout shade behind it where the frame is deep enough.
Glare control
Mild at best. Ice White and Beige pass more than half the visible light, so a bright sky stays bright, and only the darkest colours take it down much. A television or a monitor facing the window will wash out with sun on the glass, and a low sun in line with the window shows through the folds. A room built around a screen needs a light-filtering pleat.
Limitations
Do not choose it for a bedroom, a street-level bathroom or a west room. It will not darken, will not hide a lit room, and in the pale colours it passes about half the sun's energy and up to 37 percent of UV straight through. A single folded layer holds no insulating air either. If heat or privacy is the reason for the shade, a TOP honeycomb is the better buy.

We would put Orient Transparent Pleated on a kitchen window over a garden, a stair window, French doors onto a shaded patio or a breakfast nook under a deep overhang: places where the view is pleasant, the sun is already handled and nobody looks in. We make it cordless, or motorized on Somfy Cord Lift WireFree where the windows are high or many. On sunny west glass the pale colours let about half the heat through, so there we would choose a solar screen roller instead.
Orient Pleated is the light-filtering pleat in the same family: it hides the room where this one keeps the view, and it carries a much longer colour card.

Is it the same fabric as the Orient Transparent roller?
It carries the same fourteen colour names and item numbers, with TOP's pleated suffix, as the Orient Transparent roller fabric, and TOP gives both a thickness of 0.45 mm and a weight of 140 g/m2. But TOP sells the pleated cloth as a separate product on its own 238 cm roll, with its own light figures, so we hold the roller and pleated samples side by side before a house mixes the two.
Why choose a see-through pleat over a honeycomb shade?
Because a honeycomb cannot keep the view: TOP's honeycomb fabrics are light-filtering or blackout. This pleat can. The price is everything a honeycomb does well, since a single layer holds no insulating air, gives no privacy at night and lets light through the cord holes. How wide can a pleated shade in TOP Orient Transparent Pleated 20 mm be?
TOP makes Orient Transparent Pleated 20 mm in a 238 cm (93.7 in) roll. The roll width is the widest single piece we can cut, so one pleated shade can be made a little under 93.7 inches wide. Wider openings get two pleated shades side by side, set to move together, or a split placed where a mullion hides it. We confirm the exact limit for the operating system when we measure.
