TOP Honeycomb Shade Fabrics
154 colourways in 15 designs of cellular fabric, translucent and blackout, made into cordless or motorized honeycomb shades in our Fort Lauderdale workroom.
A layer of air in front of the glass
A honeycomb shade is two faces of fabric joined into a row of cells, so it hangs in front of the glass with a layer of trapped air inside it. TOP supplies the fabric with the cells already formed, on a 300 cm roll, and we cut it to the opening and build the shade. The range here is 154 colourways in 15 designs, in two families: translucent fabrics that let daylight through the cell and hide the room, and blackouts that stop the light through the cloth.
Most designs come in both. Primitivo, Chianti, Ripasso, Mogri, Soprano and Barolo each have a translucent and a blackout version with the same colour names, so a bedroom and the living room beside it can match. The cell size is the other choice: Ripasso comes in a 20 mm cell, most designs in 25 mm, 32 mm or both, and Mogri, Lonato and Soprano list 38 and 45 mm on request. TOP publishes no insulation values, so we quote none.

How we choose a TOP honeycomb
Translucent or blackout
Translucent cells for living rooms, kitchens and offices: daylight comes through evenly and the room is hidden by day, with a glow at night. Blackout cells for bedrooms, nurseries and media rooms. Most designs share colour names across the two, so they can sit side by side.
Cell size
The cell sets the look of the shade's face: a 20 mm cell gives a fine, flat front, a 25 mm cell the classic proportion, and 32 mm a bolder pleat that keeps its scale on a tall or wide window. We match it to the window and the depth of the recess.
Cordless or motorized
We build TOP honeycomb shades cordless, or motorized with Somfy Cord Lift WireFree motors in the headrail, which run on battery power, so there is no wiring to bring to the window.
Edges and light
Inside a recess a honeycomb leaves a small gap at each side. In a blackout bedroom we keep that gap as tight as the frame allows or mount outside the recess with an overlap; where a room must be fully dark, a blackout roller in side channels does it better.
What the datasheets say
TOP measures light for some of its honeycomb fabrics: Chianti, Ripasso 25 mm and Barolo publish figures per colour, and the blackouts among them show a Tv of 0. The colour can matter as much as the family. In Barolo Translucent 25 mm the White passes 11.9% of the visible light and the Black none on TOP's sheet, so a dark translucent cell can make a room nearly as dim as a blackout, while a pale one keeps it bright.
Most honeycomb sheets also list the fabric as free of PVC, lead, halogens, formaldehyde and phthalates. Two outliers matter in a South Florida house: Mogri Translucent is the one honeycomb with fire listings and a humid-room rating on its datasheet, and Primitivo Translucent and Ripasso Blackout 25 mm have no datasheet at all, so we choose them from the sample. The pleated vs cellular guide covers how a cell compares with a single pleat.

Honeycomb shade fabrics in South Florida homes
Honeycomb is our answer for bedrooms on hot west and south glass in Fort Lauderdale and Boca Raton, where the trapped air helps keep the afternoon heat off the room, and for any window where a cordless shade is wanted: a nursery, a guest room, a high window. Translucent cells suit a living room that faces a neighbour, blackout cells a bedroom or a media room. In a shallow recess we check the headrail fits before we settle the cell size.
TOP honeycomb shade fabrics: frequently asked
Is honeycomb the same as cellular?
Yes. Honeycomb and cellular are two names for the same shade: fabric formed into cells that trap a layer of air. A pleated shade looks similar from the room but is a single layer. See honeycomb shades for how we build them.
Which cell size should I choose?
For most windows 25 mm is the safe middle; 32 mm reads bolder and suits tall or wide glass, 20 mm (Ripasso) gives the finest face. Mogri, Lonato and Soprano also list 38 and 45 mm on request. We bring samples so you see the cell at the window.
Do TOP honeycomb fabrics have an insulation value?
TOP publishes no R-values for its honeycomb fabrics, so we quote none. The cells do trap a layer of air in front of the glass, which slows heat through the window compared with a single layer of fabric.
Can a TOP honeycomb shade be motorized?
Yes. We build them with Somfy Cord Lift WireFree motors in the headrail, battery powered, or cordless for a manual shade. Both keep cords out of reach, which is why we use them in nurseries.
Translucent or blackout for a bedroom?
Blackout, if the room has to be dark for sleep: the cell stops the light through the fabric, and a careful mount keeps the side gaps small. Translucent cells suit a bedroom that only needs privacy and soft morning light.
