Fine stripes in nine neutrals, from a near-dark Gunmetal to a heat-reflecting Ice White

Twinlight Blues, from TOP Window Covering, is a zebra fabric in nine neutrals with the narrow Twinlight bands: 5 cm of sheer and 7.5 cm of solid, about two inches and three inches. Across a room that fine stripe reads more as texture than as pattern. The colourways run from Ice White and Cream through Cloud and Castor Gray to Gunmetal and Chocolate, and they carry the same names as TOP's Blues roller fabric, so zebra shades in one room can sit beside plain rollers in the next. It is a heat-set polyester, 0.46 mm thick and 150 g/m2.

TOP publishes three rows, and they step evenly across the card. Gunmetal's solid band passes 0.1 percent of the visible light, so closed it is close to dark. Cloud passes 8.5 percent, a dim and even light, and Ice White 19.6 percent, soft daylight. Ice White also reflects 75.9 percent of the sun's energy back through the glass, the highest solar reflectance TOP publishes for any Twinlight design, while Gunmetal absorbs 44.7 percent and warms at the window. So the card runs from bedroom to living room: dark for sleep and screens, pale for heat and brightness.

Best Use & Limits

What Twinlight Blues does on your glass, and what it does not

Best use

Bedrooms, studies and condo living rooms with standard windows, where a fine stripe looks right at close range. Take Gunmetal for bedrooms and rooms with a television, Cloud for a study or a guest room, Ice White or Ivory for living rooms on hot glass. If the house also wants plain rollers, Blues is the Twinlight card whose colour names carry across. For a neutral fine stripe with figures behind it, choose Blues.

Privacy

Closed by day, every colour hides the room. At night the published rows tell it straight: Gunmetal keeps a lit room hidden except for fine lines of light at the stripe edges, while Cloud and Ice White hide the room but show silhouettes when the lamps are on. Open the bands at night and the sheer stripes show everything. A pale colour in a ground-floor bedroom wants a dual roller or a blackout honeycomb instead.

Glare control

Gunmetal closed is a television-friendly shade: almost no light reaches the screen except at the stripe edges. Cloud brings direct sun down to a dim, even glow, easier on a screen than Ice White, which leaves a bright panel behind a monitor. Open, the bands let the sun in as stripes, since the Ice White sheer band passes 87.7 percent, and a setting sun square to the glass comes straight through them.

Limitations

Blues will not black out a room, even in Gunmetal, and it will not stop heat with the bands open, because the sheer stripes pass most of the sun: on unshaded west glass a solar shade is the better tool. It has no fire listing, which rules out hotel rooms and condo common areas. And only three of the nine colours have published figures, so Rock Ridge or Neutral Gray is chosen on the sample.

Tv = visible light transmitted, Ts = solar energy transmitted, Rs = solar energy reflected, As = solar energy absorbed, Tuv = UV transmitted, in percent for the fabric alone, as published on TOP's datasheet; a dash means TOP publishes no figure for that colour. On the Twinlight sheets the main row is the solid band and the sheer-band columns are TOP's figures for the open stripe. We bring TOP samples of the colours you shortlist to the consultation.

Where Twinlight Blues works here

Blues is the Twinlight design we would specify through a whole condo: Ice White on the living-room glass facing the water, where it sends most of the sun back out, Gunmetal in the bedrooms, Cloud in a study or a guest room. The fine bands suit standard windows and bedroom-scale glass, and where a room wants a plain roller instead, the roller fabric carries the same colour names. We cut side-by-side Blues shades so the stripes run level from one shade to the next, on Lutron or Somfy motors.

Twinlight Dixie XL runs a similar neutral card on wide bands, also with published figures; Blues is the one for a finer stripe and the higher heat reflection in Ice White.

Good to Know

Twinlight Blues: frequently asked

Will Gunmetal darken a bedroom?

Very nearly. At 0.1 percent visible transmission through the solid band, Gunmetal takes the room to a dim, even darkness with the bands offset. It is not a full blackout: light still passes at the edges of the stripes and down the sides of the shade, and it shows as thin lines at sunrise. For a bedroom that must be completely dark, a blackout roller in side channels or a blackout honeycomb does the job.

Ice White or Cloud for a living room on the water?

Ice White if heat is the concern: it reflects 75.9 percent of the sun's energy and keeps the room brightest, at 19.6 percent through the solid band. Cloud passes 8.5 percent and reflects 64.3 percent, so it cuts glare further and still sends most of the heat back out, at the cost of a dimmer room with the bands closed. Both show silhouettes after dark with the lamps on.

Do the zebra and roller Blues fabrics match?

They share all nine colour names and the same 0.46 mm thickness, but the roller fabric is heavier and has no bands, so the same colour can read a little differently at the window. We hold the two samples together at your glass before ordering, and we would use them in adjoining rooms rather than side by side on one wall.

How wide can a zebra shade in TOP Twinlight Blues be?

TOP makes Twinlight Blues in a 280 cm (110 in) roll. The roll width is the widest single piece we can cut, so one zebra shade can be made a little under 110 inches wide. Wider openings get two zebra shades side by side, set to move together, or a split placed where a mullion hides it. We confirm the exact limit for the operating system when we measure.

Which shades can be made in Twinlight Blues?

Twinlight Blues is a zebra shade fabric: one continuous loop of fabric with alternating sheer and solid bands. We buy it from TOP Window Covering and make the zebra shades in our Fort Lauderdale workroom, on a manual chain or motorized on Lutron or Somfy, and our own team installs them from Miami to Palm Beach.

Can I see Twinlight Blues samples before ordering?

Yes. Shortlist the colours here and we bring TOP samples of them to the in-home consultation, so you can hold them against your own glass in your own light. Our Fort Lauderdale workroom (4539 Powerline Rd, by appointment) and Miami Beach showroom (500 South Pointe Dr #150) have motorized shades running if you want to see one move.
