The fire-listed Twinlight: a PVC-coated zebra for hotels, offices and humid rooms

Twinlight C-Screen is the zebra fabric TOP Window Covering builds like a contract screen: 35% polyester and 65% PVC with an acrylic foam coating, 0.57 mm thick and 265 g/m2. Like every Twinlight design it alternates sheer and solid bands on one loop, here a 5 cm mesh band and a 7.5 cm solid band, about 2 and 3 inches. It is the only Twinlight design in our library with fire listings on its datasheet: NFPA 701, California Title 19, CAN/ULC-S109, EN 13773 and DIN 4102 B1. That makes it the zebra shade for hotel rooms, offices and condo common areas, where a fire marshal reads the specification.

The seven colours behave very differently. White and Ivory pass about a fifth of the visible light through the solid band, 21.5% and 20.2%, and reflect most of the sun's energy back out, so the room stays bright with the bands offset. Gray, Taupe and Anthracite pass 2.5%, 1.1% and 0.4%: offset, the room goes dim, though light still runs along the stripe edges and down the sides. Beige sits between at 13.3%, and Ice White has no published figures. The trade-off is the PVC: TOP's datasheet says it is not PVC-free, which rules it out for clients who ask for that.

Best Use & Limits

What Twinlight C-Screen does on your glass, and what it does not

Best use

Hotel guest rooms, condo corridors and amenity rooms, offices and conference rooms: anywhere the shade goes through a fire review. It is also our Twinlight for bathrooms and pool rooms. Choose Gray, Taupe or Anthracite where the room has to go dim, White or Ivory where daylight is the point. If nobody will ask for a fire listing and the room is dry, a PVC-free polyester Twinlight gives more designs to choose from.

Privacy

By day, with the bands offset, every colour hides the room from the street. After dark, Gray, Taupe and Anthracite pass 2.5% of the light or less through the solid band, so a lit room shows little beyond light at the stripe edges. White and Ivory pass about a fifth, so people near a lamp show as silhouettes. With the bands aligned, the mesh stripes show a lit room in any colour.

Glare control

Offset in Anthracite or Taupe, direct sun becomes a dim, even light and a TV or monitor facing the window stays readable. White and Ivory soften the sun but leave enough brightness through the solid band to wash out a screen. Aligned, the mesh stripes let the sun through in bars, and a low sun in line with the window comes straight in. TOP publishes no light figure for the mesh band itself.

Limitations

Do not buy it as a blackout. Even Anthracite leaks light at the stripe edges and along both sides, so a bedroom or a hotel room that has to be dark needs a blackout shade with side channels, or a blackout layer behind the zebra. It is not PVC-free, and at 265 g/m2 it is heavy for a zebra fabric.

Where Twinlight C-Screen works here

This is the zebra we would specify for a hotel room or a condo amenity room, where the shade faces a fire review. It also stands up to sun: TOP rates its colour fastness to light at 8 on DIN ISO 105-B02, the scale's top grade. On west glass from Miami to Palm Beach we take Gray or Anthracite so the offset bands shut out most of the afternoon light; on north or shaded glass, White or Ivory keeps the room bright. Motorized, it runs on Lutron or Somfy.

Twinlight Blues covers a similar range of light with the same 5 cm and 7.5 cm bands in PVC-free polyester; C-Screen is the one to take when a fire listing or a humid room decides the order.

Good to Know

Twinlight C-Screen: frequently asked

Can it go in a bathroom?

Yes. TOP's datasheet rates Twinlight C-Screen as suitable for humid environments and lists fungal resistance, and it cleans with a damp cloth. That makes it the Twinlight design we would put in a bathroom, a pool bath or a kitchen window that takes steam. None of the other Twinlight designs in our library carries a humidity rating from TOP, so we keep those in dry rooms.

Is it PVC-free?

No. The composition is 35% polyester and 65% PVC, and TOP's datasheet marks it as not PVC-free, while listing it as free of lead, halogens, formaldehyde and phthalates. If PVC-free is a requirement, the polyester Twinlight designs such as Twinlight Linen qualify, but none of them carries fire listings, so a zebra from TOP's Twinlight line cannot meet both requirements.

Which colour gets the room darkest?

Anthracite. Its solid band passes 0.4% of visible light, against 1.1% for Taupe and 2.5% for Gray, so with the bands offset the room goes close to dark. It is still not a blackout shade: light passes at the stripe edges and around the sides. Anthracite also absorbs 79.3% of the sun's energy that reaches it, so on west glass it runs warm.

How wide can a zebra shade in TOP Twinlight C-Screen be?

TOP makes Twinlight C-Screen in a 280 cm (110 in) roll. The roll width is the widest single piece we can cut, so one zebra shade can be made a little under 110 inches wide. Wider openings get two zebra shades side by side, set to move together, or a split placed where a mullion hides it. We confirm the exact limit for the operating system when we measure.

Which shades can be made in Twinlight C-Screen?

Twinlight C-Screen is a zebra shade fabric: one continuous loop of fabric with alternating sheer and solid bands. We buy it from TOP Window Covering and make the zebra shades in our Fort Lauderdale workroom, on a manual chain or motorized on Lutron or Somfy, and our own team installs them from Miami to Palm Beach.

Is Twinlight C-Screen flame retardant?

TOP's datasheet for Twinlight C-Screen lists NFPA 701, California Title 19, CAN/ULC-S109, EN 13773, DIN 4102 B1. For a hotel, a condo common area or an office, ask us for the datasheet with your quote: the building's reviewer or the fire marshal will want the listing in writing.

Can I see Twinlight C-Screen samples before ordering?

Yes. Shortlist the colours here and we bring TOP samples of them to the in-home consultation, so you can hold them against your own glass in your own light. Our Fort Lauderdale workroom (4539 Powerline Rd, by appointment) and Miami Beach showroom (500 South Pointe Dr #150) have motorized shades running if you want to see one move.
