Wide bands for sliders and tall glass, in ten neutrals from Ice White to Gunmetal

Twinlight Dixie XL is the wide-band half of TOP Window Covering's Dixie pair, with sheer bands of 7 cm and solid bands of 10 cm, close to three inches and four, in a heat-set polyester 0.35 mm thick at 140 g/m2. On a slider or a tall window the broad stripe reads as clean horizontal lines, where a fine stripe would blur into texture at that distance. Ten colourways stay in neutral territory, from Ice White, Ivory and Champagne through Stone and Mud to Slate, Iron and Gunmetal. It is for large openings, from a family room to a condo with a wall of sliders.

Three colourways carry TOP's published figures, and between them they cover the job. Gunmetal passes 0.5 percent of the visible light through its solid band and Mud 2.1 percent, so either closes a bedroom or a media room to a very dim, even light. Ice White passes 22.8 percent and reflects 71.9 percent of the sun's energy, which makes it the colour for a bright living room on hot glass. With the bands open, its sheer stripes are close to clear. The trade-off sits at the dark end, where Gunmetal takes far more of the sun's energy into the cloth than Ice White does.

Best Use & Limits

What Twinlight Dixie XL does on your glass, and what it does not

Best use

Large openings: sliders, corner glass and tall living-room windows, where a wide stripe holds together at a distance. Ice White is the living-room colour on sunny glass, because it reflects most of the heat and keeps the room bright. Gunmetal or Mud belong in bedrooms and media rooms. Stone, Champagne and Slate publish no figures, so we show them at the window first. For big glass in a neutral room, choose Dixie XL over Dixie.

Privacy

Offset in daylight, the bands hide the room in every colour. After dark it splits: Gunmetal keeps a lit room hidden apart from thin light at the stripe edges, Mud nearly as well, while Ice White, at 22.8 percent through the solid band, shows silhouettes. Aligned at night, the open stripes show the room plainly. Where a pale room needs night privacy, a dual roller with a blackout behind is the better shade.

Glare control

Offset in Gunmetal, the shade takes the glare off a television almost completely, and Mud comes close. Ice White cuts direct sun to soft, bright daylight, pleasant to sit in but a glowing panel behind a monitor. Aligned, the bands pass the sun in stripes; the Ice White sheer band alone transmits 87.3 percent. When the late sun sits square in the window, close the bands: with them open, it comes straight through.

Limitations

Dixie XL is not a blackout, even in Gunmetal: light passes at the stripe edges and the sides of the shade. On a small window the wide bands give only a few stripes and can look heavy, so Dixie suits it better. And it has no fire listing, so a hotel room, an office or a condo common area needs Twinlight C-Screen, the flame-retardant Twinlight design.

Tv = visible light transmitted, Ts = solar energy transmitted, Rs = solar energy reflected, As = solar energy absorbed, Tuv = UV transmitted, in percent for the fabric alone, as published on TOP's datasheet; a dash means TOP publishes no figure for that colour. On the Twinlight sheets the main row is the solid band and the sheer-band columns are TOP's figures for the open stripe. We bring TOP samples of the colours you shortlist to the consultation.

South Florida

Where Twinlight Dixie XL works here

Dixie XL is the Twinlight design we would reach for on a wall of sliders in a Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood or Miami Beach condo: the wide bands suit the scale, and Ice White sends most of the afternoon sun back out through the glass with the bands closed. In the bedrooms on the same floor we would take Gunmetal or Mud. Side-by-side shades are cut so the bands line up across the mullions, and Lutron or Somfy motors move them as one.

Twinlight Dixie is the same thickness and weight with narrower bands, in nine neutrals that include Black, Beige and Nougat, but TOP publishes no light figures for it.

Good to Know

Twinlight Dixie XL: frequently asked

Gunmetal or Mud for a bedroom?

Both close to a very dim light. Gunmetal is the darker, at 0.5 percent visible transmission against 2.1 percent for Mud, and the better at hiding a lit room at night. Mud is the warmer colour and reflects slightly more of the sun's energy. Neither is a full blackout: light passes at the stripe edges and down the sides of the shade, so a bedroom that must be completely dark needs a blackout roller in side channels.

Which Dixie XL colour keeps a room coolest?

Ice White, with the bands closed. Its solid band reflects 71.9 percent of the sun's energy back out through the glass and absorbs only 3.8 percent. Gunmetal lets less through but absorbs 44.4 percent, so the cloth itself warms at the window. With the bands open, the sheer stripes pass most of the sun in any colour, so on west glass the shade only helps while it is closed.

How wide can a zebra shade in TOP Twinlight Dixie XL be?

TOP makes Twinlight Dixie XL in a 280 cm (110 in) roll. The roll width is the widest single piece we can cut, so one zebra shade can be made a little under 110 inches wide. Wider openings get two zebra shades side by side, set to move together, or a split placed where a mullion hides it. We confirm the exact limit for the operating system when we measure.

Which shades can be made in Twinlight Dixie XL?

Twinlight Dixie XL is a zebra shade fabric: one continuous loop of fabric with alternating sheer and solid bands. We buy it from TOP Window Covering and make the zebra shades in our Fort Lauderdale workroom, on a manual chain or motorized on Lutron or Somfy, and our own team installs them from Miami to Palm Beach.

Can I see Twinlight Dixie XL samples before ordering?

Yes. Shortlist the colours here and we bring TOP samples of them to the in-home consultation, so you can hold them against your own glass in your own light. Our Fort Lauderdale workroom (4539 Powerline Rd, by appointment) and Miami Beach showroom (500 South Pointe Dr #150) have motorized shades running if you want to see one move.
