Fine stripes in 23 colours, for rooms where the shade is meant to bring the colour

Twinlight is TOP Window Covering's name for its zebra fabrics, and Seasons carries the widest colour card in the line: 23 colourways, from Ice White, Sand and Stone through Dandelion, Coral and Meadow to Deep Red and Black/Black. The loop alternates a sheer band of 5 cm, about two inches, with a solid band of 7.5 cm, about three, so on the window it reads as a fine stripe rather than a bold one. At 0.33 mm it is also the thinnest Twinlight cloth, which keeps the roll slim in the cassette. It is for rooms that want colour at the window rather than another neutral.

On Seasons the colour sets the light, and TOP's three published rows sit further apart than on any other Twinlight design. Black/Black publishes 0 percent visible transmission through the solid band, so with the bands offset the room goes close to dark. Sand passes 16.7 percent, an even daylight. Ice White passes 39.1 percent and reflects 57.8 percent of the sun's energy back out, so it glows when closed and keeps the room bright. The trade-off is fading: TOP rates colour fastness to light at 4 - 5, a step below most of the Twinlight line, so the strong colours belong on shaded glass.

Best Use & Limits

What Twinlight Seasons does on your glass, and what it does not

Best use

A room that wants colour at the window and does not take hard sun: a child's bedroom, a playroom, a home office or a guest room on the shaded side of the house. Choose Black/Black where the room has to go dark at night, and Ice White or White where it has to stay bright by day. On west-facing or south-facing glass, take a neutral and save the strong colours for the shaded rooms.

Privacy

By day, offset bands hide the room in any colour, because the street is brighter than the room; aligned, the open stripes let someone at the glass see in. After dark the colour decides. Black/Black keeps a lit room hidden apart from fine lines of light at the stripe edges; Sand shows silhouettes, and Ice White shows them sharply. For night privacy in a pale colour, choose a dual roller with a blackout behind.

Glare control

Aligned, the bands let the sun in as stripes: TOP measures the Ice White sheer band at 89.7 percent, so a television facing the window picks up bars of glare. Offset, the solid band does the work: Black/Black takes the glare off a screen almost entirely, Sand softens it, and Ice White leaves a glowing panel that washes out a monitor. A low sun in line with the window shows through any pale colour.

Limitations

Do not buy Seasons in Orange, Coral or Deep Red for a room in direct afternoon sun: with a fade rating of 4 - 5, those colours show it first. Even Black/Black is not a full blackout. Only three of the 23 colourways publish optical figures, so the rest are chosen on the sample. With no fire listing, it is not for a hotel room or a condo lobby, where Twinlight C-Screen is the answer.

Tv = visible light transmitted, Ts = solar energy transmitted, Rs = solar energy reflected, As = solar energy absorbed, Tuv = UV transmitted, in percent for the fabric alone, as published on TOP's datasheet; a dash means TOP publishes no figure for that colour. On the Twinlight sheets the main row is the solid band and the sheer-band columns are TOP's figures for the open stripe. We bring TOP samples of the colours you shortlist to the consultation.

South Florida

Where Twinlight Seasons works here

We would put Seasons where colour is wanted and the sun is filtered: a north-facing child's room, a study under a deep balcony, a guest room on the shaded side of a Fort Lauderdale condo tower. On west or south glass we keep to the neutrals. TOP's collection page carries the OEKO-TEX and REACH logos, and the datasheet lists the cloth as free of lead, formaldehyde and phthalates, which matters in a nursery. Lutron or Somfy motors stop the bands wherever you set them.

Twinlight Blues shares the fine bands but on a heavier cloth with a better fade rating, in nine neutrals with published light figures; if the Seasons colour you had in mind was a neutral for sunny glass, Blues is the safer buy.

Good to Know

Twinlight Seasons: frequently asked

Will the bright colours fade in South Florida sun?

Sooner than the neutrals will. TOP rates Seasons at 4 - 5 for colour fastness to light, on a scale where a higher number holds its colour longer, and most Twinlight fabrics rate higher. Orange, Coral and Deep Red are the first to show it on unshaded west or south glass. On those windows we specify Ice White, White, Beige or Sand, and keep the strong colours for north-facing and shaded rooms.

Is Black/Black a blackout zebra shade?

Nearly. Its solid band publishes 0 percent visible transmission, so each solid stripe blacks out and, with the bands offset, the room goes almost dark. Light still passes at the edges of the stripes and down the sides of the shade, which you notice most at dawn. For a bedroom that has to be fully dark, a blackout roller in side channels is the shade to choose.

Why does Ice White stay so bright with the bands closed?

Its solid band passes 39.1 percent of the visible light, the most of the three rows TOP publishes for Seasons, so closed it turns the sun into a glowing panel rather than shutting it out. That is pleasant in a living room by day. After dark, with the lamps on, it shows clear silhouettes to the street, so in a bedroom choose Black/Black or keep the pale colour to a window nobody overlooks.

How wide can a zebra shade in TOP Twinlight Seasons be?

TOP makes Twinlight Seasons in a 280 cm (110 in) roll. The roll width is the widest single piece we can cut, so one zebra shade can be made a little under 110 inches wide. Wider openings get two zebra shades side by side, set to move together, or a split placed where a mullion hides it. We confirm the exact limit for the operating system when we measure.

Which shades can be made in Twinlight Seasons?

Twinlight Seasons is a zebra shade fabric: one continuous loop of fabric with alternating sheer and solid bands. We buy it from TOP Window Covering and make the zebra shades in our Fort Lauderdale workroom, on a manual chain or motorized on Lutron or Somfy, and our own team installs them from Miami to Palm Beach.

Can I see Twinlight Seasons samples before ordering?

Yes. Shortlist the colours here and we bring TOP samples of them to the in-home consultation, so you can hold them against your own glass in your own light. Our Fort Lauderdale workroom (4539 Powerline Rd, by appointment) and Miami Beach showroom (500 South Pointe Dr #150) have motorized shades running if you want to see one move.
