Transparent Shades and Blinds: Every See-Through Window Treatment, Compared

"Transparent shades" is what people type when they want the view and the glare control at the same time. Six products do it, each to a different degree, and none of them is see-through one way. Here they are with the makers' view-through numbers, the privacy physics and what we install on South Florida glass.

The Honest Answer

Six ways to see through a window covering, and one thing none of them does

The short answer. No window covering is clear like glass. "Transparent shades and blinds" means one of six see-through products: a solar screen roller shade (a woven mesh, 1 to 10% open, the most transparent and the most precisely rated: Lutron's view-through figures for Mermet E Screen run from 1% for a white 1% weave to 81% for a charcoal 10%), a sheer roller shade (a soft polyester sheer on a tube), a horizontal sheer shade (fabric vanes between two sheer layers that tilt open for the view, sold elsewhere as Shangri-La shades), a zebra shade with its sheer and solid bands aligned, a sheer drapery, or an Allusion sheer vertical on a sliding door. Dark fabric and a looser weave give the clearest view; white fabric and a tight weave give the brightest room and the least view, and the most heat control.

The one thing none of them does is let you see out while nobody sees in after dark. By day the bright side is outside and the fabric reads opaque from the street; once the lights are on inside, every one of them is see-through from outside. Night privacy is a second layer, a zebra with its bands offset, or a horizontal sheer with its vanes closed.

We fabricate and install all six in Fort Lauderdale and Miami Beach, motorized on Lutron, Somfy, Crestron and Vertilux, so the choice is the window's, not ours. The figures below are the ones the mills publish (Lutron's fabric library for the screens we install most, Mermet's spec sheets, TOP's datasheets), with the gaps named where a product has no published number.

The Numbers

What transparent means at the glass #

Only solar screens carry a published view-through rating, so they are the yardstick. Openness is the share of the weave that is open air; Tv is the share of visible light that passes; the view rating is the mill's measure of how clearly you see through the fabric. Lutron's published figures for Mermet E Screen, the screen we install most, by openness and colour:

OpennessCharcoal/Grey (dark)Pearl/Grey (mid)White/White (light)

10%Tv 11% · Ts 12% · view 81%Tv 14% · Ts 16% · view 68%Tv 22% · Ts 25% · view 50%

Tv = visible transmittance, Ts = solar transmittance, view = view-through rating, as published by Lutron for each E Screen colourway (lutronfabrics.com, retrieved September 2026). Lutron's library carries 107 solar-screen colourways at 1%, 128 at 3%, 95 at 5% and 42 at 10%. The full openness guide: 1% vs 3% vs 5% vs 10%.

Dark is clear, light is frosted

Read across any row: at 3% openness the charcoal weave is rated 42% view-through and the white 17%. A dark yarn absorbs the light that hits it instead of scattering it, so the eye reads the scene behind the mesh; a white yarn scatters light and glows, which brightens the room and softens the view to shapes. The price of the clear view is heat: that same charcoal 3% leaves 0.62 of the sun's energy in the room on clear double glazing against 0.28 for the white, which is why our heat ranking puts the two fabrics in different tiers.

Privacy is a light balance, not a fabric

By day a transparent shade gives privacy because the bright side is outside: the person on the street sees light bouncing off the fabric, not the dim room behind it, a lighter colour reads a little more opaque from outside, and a tight weave does more for privacy than any colour. At night the physics reverses and every solar screen, sheer and zebra-in-the-open becomes see-through once the lights are on, whatever the colour. That is not a flaw in the product; it is the reason the bedroom gets a second layer.

Sheers are graded, not measured

The mills publish openness and view ratings for screens because a screen is a mesh. Sheer rollers, horizontal sheer vanes, zebra bands and sheer draperies are graded by opacity instead: Lutron lists no transmittance figure for its Tre Sheer vanes, TOP's Twinlight sheets give one blended value per colour, and no mill rates a drapery voile. Where a card below says "not published", that is the mill's silence, not ours.

Transparent and UV-safe at the same time

Transparency is visible light; UV is a separate band, and a screen stops it regardless of how clear the view is. Mermet rates E Screen at approximately 99.5% UV blockage at 0.5% openness, 97% at 3% and 90% at 10%, so a charcoal 5% that shows the ocean still protects the floors and the art. What UV does to a Florida interior.

The Options

The six transparent treatments, one by one #

Each card separates what the product is, what the maker publishes, and what we see on our own jobs. Most transparent first.

Most transparent, most precise

Solar screen roller shades #

What it is A woven mesh (fiberglass or polyester core, vinyl coated) on a roller tube. The openness factor is the share of the weave that is open air, 1% to 10%, and the colour decides whether the view reads clear (dark) or frosted (light). The shade behind most of our oceanfront work.

Published figure Lutron's view-through ratings for Mermet E Screen: Charcoal/Grey 25% at 1%, 42% at 3%, 56% at 5%, 81% at 10%; White/White 1%, 17%, 28%, 50% at the same openness. Visible light through the charcoal runs 2 to 11%, through the white 11 to 22%. UV blockage about 97% at 3%. Widths to 124 in in Lutron's solar fabrics.

Our experience Charcoal at 1 to 3% when the client is buying the view (SheerWeave 2500 1% in Charcoal in the Boca golf course guest house); white or White/Linen when the room is buying a cooler afternoon (Salato, Trump Tower III, Turnberry); Coulisse Paris 3% in Gardenia behind the office drapery at Landmark Ranch Estates. Openness 1% vs 3% vs 5% vs 10%; dark or light.

Soft, glowing, no mesh look

Sheer roller shades #

What it is A soft polyester sheer on a roller instead of a fiberglass screen: the drape and glow of a sheer drapery with the neatness of a roller. Lutron's Ethos, new in 2026, comes in eight colours at 1%, 3% and 5% openness, PVC-free; Tre Sheer is the over-10% member of the family.

Published figure Lutron lists Ethos at 1%, 3% and 5% openness and grades Tre Sheer by opacity without a transmittance figure. The view is softer than a screen's at the same openness because the yarn is a textile, not a coated monofilament.

Our experience The living-room shade for clients who find a mesh too technical and a drapery too much fabric: motorized on Lutron or Somfy, it reads as a sheer when down and disappears when up. See roller shades and the Lutron sheer fabrics.

Vanes that tilt, sometimes sold as Shangri-La

Horizontal sheer shades #

What it is Two or three inch fabric vanes suspended between two layers of sheer knit. Vanes open, you look out between them and the sheer layers filter the light into a glow; vanes closed, the room has privacy without going dark. Retailers sell the same construction as Shangri-La shades, silhouette-style shades or sheer horizontal blinds.

Published figure We fit 2 in and 3 in vanes; Lutron's sheer-shade fabrics run to 114 in usable width in light-filtering and room-darkening versions; Crestron's 3 in horizontal sheer gives a view of about 1.5 in between open vanes. The mills grade these fabrics by opacity rather than publishing a transmittance figure.

Our experience Living rooms and oceanfront condos where the client wants drapery softness and blind control in one, with the 3 in vane on floor-to-ceiling glass. Room-darkening versions are the only transparent shade that gives night privacy on its own, vanes closed. Motorized tilt and lift on Lutron, Somfy and Crestron.

Transparent when the bands line up

Zebra (dual, banded) shades #

What it is Alternating sheer and opaque bands on one continuous loop. Align the bands and the sheer bands show the view; offset them and the solid bands overlap for privacy. Also sold as dual, banded or layered shades.

Published figure Rated by opacity, not openness. TOP's Twinlight fabrics publish one blended EN 410 value per colour (solar transmittance 15 to 24%) and no split between the bands, and the sheer band is far more open than a 3 to 5% screen, so a zebra passes more light and sun than a screen of the same colour.

Our experience Bedrooms and home offices that want one shade for both jobs. White and cream bands glow in the sun; grey and charcoal bands give the clearer view through the sheer bands. Fabrics: TOP zebra fabrics; motorized on Lutron or Somfy.

Our most requested treatment

Sheer draperies #

What it is Floor-to-ceiling voiles and linens on a track, hemmed to the millimetre in our Fort Lauderdale workroom. They filter hard sunlight into a soft, even glow, frame the view instead of hiding it, and stack off the glass entirely when drawn.

Published figure Sheers are the open-weave class of drapery, 25% or more open, and no mill publishes a view-through rating for them; what you see through a sheer depends on the weave, the fullness and the light balance.

Our experience On nearly every oceanfront project we do, usually layered over a solar screen or a blackout that does the heat and night work: Villa Nova Geneva Chalk sheers on recessed Somfy tracks at the Boca Raton oceanfront condo, sheers over screens at Turnberry Ocean Club, sheers on decorative Lutron tracks at the Fort Lauderdale estate.

The transparent vertical for sliders

Allusion sheer vertical blinds #

What it is Overlapping sheer and fabric vanes hung vertically from a track: they filter light like a drapery, rotate for privacy, glide aside for open-door days, and you can walk straight through the closed vanes. Searching for illusion blinds? Same product.

Published figure No published transmittance figure; the system is graded by its vane fabrics. The practical figures are the ones that matter on a slider: no wand, no hard slats, and a stack that clears the opening.

Our experience The modern replacement for dated verticals on balcony and patio sliders and wide glass walls from Miami to Boca Raton, custom-sized in our workroom. For night privacy on a slider we pair it with a drapery or specify a sheer drapery on a motorized track instead.

Our experience The pairing we specify most. A solar screen for the day and a blackout behind it for the night, on one dual roller, or a sheer drapery over a screen on an ocean wall. The screen keeps the view and the glare in hand, the second layer answers the one question a transparent shade cannot. At Hillsboro Mile the primary suite runs a Bright White basketweave screen over a Luna White blackout in one opening; at Turnberry the living room runs sheers over E Screen.

Which One

Which transparent treatment for which window #

Our experience What we recommend most often, from our own jobs; the visit settles your glass.

Ocean or water view, living room

Charcoal or Charcoal/Grey solar screen at 3% (42% view-through) or 5% (56%), motorized, with sheer draperies over it if the room wants softness. The view stays, the glare goes, and the afternoon heat is handled by a schedule rather than by colour.

West glass that cooks the room

A white or White/Linen screen at 1 to 3%: 1 to 17% view-through, a bright glow, and the best heat figure of any screen. If the client will not give up the view, a dual-sided fabric with white toward the glass and charcoal toward the room, or the dark screen plus an exterior screen outside.

Bedroom that wants light by day and dark by night

A dual roller (screen over blackout) or a zebra shade with room-darkening bands. A transparent shade alone will not do the night half of the job.

Sliding glass doors to a balcony

Sheer draperies on a motorized track that stack off the glass, or Allusion sheer verticals you walk through. Both keep the view and the breeze; neither is private at night without a second layer.

Home office glare on a screen

Charcoal at 1 to 3%: 2 to 5% of visible light, the sharpest view, no reflections on the monitor. For a video-call background, the horizontal sheer with the vanes half open reads best on camera.

A condo with a white-from-the-street rule

A White/White or White/Linen screen, a dual-sided screen with the white face to the glass, or a sheer in a warm white. The rule and the heat physics point the same way; why.

Expertise

Ask for the openness, the colour and the night plan

A quote that says "sheer" or "transparent" tells you nothing. Ask for the fabric, the openness factor, the colour toward the glass and what the window does at 9 PM with the lights on. We write all four into every quote, bring the actual samples to the window at the time of day the glare happens, and show every openness and colour in the Fort Lauderdale and Miami Beach showrooms.

Good to Know

Frequently asked

What are transparent shades and blinds? #

There is no window covering that is clear like glass, so 'transparent' in practice means see-through to a degree: a solar screen roller shade (a woven mesh with 1 to 10% of its area open, the most precise option), a sheer roller shade (a soft polyester sheer on a tube), a horizontal sheer shade (fabric vanes between two layers of sheer that tilt open for a view, sometimes sold as Shangri-La shades), a zebra shade with its sheer and solid bands aligned, a sheer drapery, or an Allusion sheer vertical on a sliding door. Lutron's published view-through ratings for the Mermet E Screen we install most run from 1% (a white 1% weave) to 81% (a charcoal 10% weave).

Which window shade is the most transparent? #

A dark solar screen in a high openness. In Lutron's figures for Mermet E Screen, Charcoal/Grey at 10% openness is rated 81% view-through with 11% of visible light passing; at 5% it is 56%, at 3% 42% and at 1% 25%. A white weave at the same openness looks more like frosted glass from inside: White/White 3% is rated 17% view-through. Dark fabric and a looser weave give the clearest view; a tight white weave gives the brightest room and the least view.

Are there blinds you can see out of but nobody can see in? #

By day, yes; by night, no, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling you a daytime photograph. A solar screen or sheer works by light balance: in daylight the bright side is outside, so a passer-by sees light bouncing off the fabric, not the dim room behind it, and a tighter weave or a lighter colour reads more opaque from the street. Once the lights are on inside, the balance reverses and every transparent shade becomes see-through from outside. Night privacy needs a second layer (a blackout behind the screen on a dual roller, a drapery), a zebra shade with the bands offset, or a horizontal sheer with the vanes closed.

Transparent, sheer and light-filtering: what is the difference? #

Transparent (a solar screen) keeps the view: you see the shapes outside through a mesh. Sheer (a sheer roller fabric, a horizontal sheer shade, a sheer drapery) diffuses the light into a glow and softens the view to shapes and colours. Light-filtering (a translucent roller or honeycomb fabric) lets light through but no view at all. The mills publish an openness factor and a view-through rating for screens; sheers are graded by opacity instead, and Lutron lists no transmittance figure for its Tre Sheer vanes.

What openness factor keeps the view? #

3% is the South Florida default and 5% is the view weave: in Charcoal/Grey E Screen, 3% is rated 42% view-through and 5% 56%, with 5 and 7% of visible light passing. 10% (81% view-through) suits shaded or north glass and reads airy; 1% (25%) is the glare and privacy weave. Lutron's library runs 107 solar-screen colourways at 1%, 128 at 3%, 95 at 5% and 42 at 10%. The full table is on our openness guide.

Do transparent shades block heat and UV? #

UV, yes: Mermet rates E Screen at approximately 99.5% UV blockage at 0.5% openness, 97% at 3% and 90% at 10%. Heat depends on colour far more than on openness: on clear double glazing a White/White E Screen 3% leaves 0.28 of the sun's energy in the room and a Charcoal/Charcoal 3% leaves 0.62, because the dark weave absorbs 90 to 95% of what hits it. So the most transparent fabric (dark) is the glare and view fabric, and the brightest (white) is the heat fabric. Our ranking of every product for heat has the full numbers.

Are zebra shades transparent? #

Half of the time. A zebra shade alternates sheer and solid bands on one loop: with the bands aligned the sheer bands show the view like a sheer, with the bands offset the solid bands overlap for privacy. The sheer band is far more open than a 3 to 5% screen, so a zebra passes more sun than a screen of the same colour; it is a light-control and privacy shade first, and the mills rate its fabrics by opacity rather than openness.

What are Shangri-La or horizontal sheer shades? #

The same product under different retail names: 2 or 3 in fabric vanes suspended between two layers of sheer knit. Vanes open, you look out between them (Crestron's 3 in version gives a view of about 1.5 in between vanes) and the sheer layers glow; vanes closed, the room has privacy without going dark, and the room-darkening versions give night privacy with the lights on. We fit them with 2 in and 3 in vanes, manual or motorized on Lutron, Somfy and Crestron, in Lutron fabrics to 114 in wide.

What is the transparent option for sliding glass doors? #

Two. A sheer drapery on a track, which stacks off the glass and is our most requested treatment on oceanfront condos, or Allusion blinds, a sheer vertical system with overlapping sheer and fabric vanes that you walk straight through: rotate the vanes for privacy, glide them aside for open-door days. Both filter hard sun into an even glow; neither gives night privacy with the lights on unless layered.

Do you sell clear plastic or vinyl blinds? #

No. Clear vinyl roll-downs are a patio-enclosure product, not a window shade, and they trap heat against the glass. For a window that must keep its view we specify a solar screen in the openness and colour the view needs, and for a terrace we specify exterior screens in weather-rated mesh.

Can transparent shades be motorized? #

All of them. Solar screens, sheer rollers and zebra shades run on Lutron, Somfy, Vertilux VTi or our Essential motors; horizontal sheer shades tilt and lift on Lutron, Somfy and Crestron; sheer draperies glide on Somfy, Lutron, Forest and Crestron tracks; Allusion vanes rotate and traverse on a motorized track. Battery motors need no wiring, which is how most condo projects go in.

What do transparent shades cost? #

A motorized solar-screen roller shade for one 72 by 84 in window runs from about $733 on our Essential motor to about $793 on Somfy WireFree, about $1,910 on wired Somfy and about $3,141 on wired Lutron, fabric and motor included, from our published price list; the instant price tool prices any size. Horizontal sheer, zebra and Allusion shades and sheer draperies are quoted after the free in-home measure.
