Holland & Sherry Cairn Plain
Wool plain, 1 colourway, 100% wool, 48 in wide. Holland & Sherry's own figures, and how we make it up as draperies in our Fort Lauderdale workroom, from the cloth your designer orders.
A wool plain at 48 in, in one colourway
Holland & Sherry make Cairn Plain as a wool plain, in their Highland Fling collection (100% wool, 48 in wide, made in Italy). Holland & Sherry list one colourway, Wheaten. Their spec sheet gives its end use as "Upholstery, drapery, wall upholstery, soft goods and accessories".
The 48 in width runs up the roll, so panels are made of joined widths and the seams fall inside the pleats.
Wool brings weight, a soft hand and quiet, and it resists flame on its own; what it does not resist is the sun, which fades and weakens it, so it wants a lining and, on bright south and west glass, a shade in front of it. In a lived-in, air-conditioned house it is at home; in a house shut up for the summer, humidity is its risk (curtain fabric types). At 28 oz per linear yard (870 g per linear metre) it is a heavy cloth, so the track or rod is sized for the weight.
Their drapery note advises hanging the drapery before it is hemmed, so the cloth settles to the room, and lining every drapery, to block the light and protect the face.

What Cairn Plain does at the window, and what it does not
Best use
Cairn Plain is a heavy cloth, the kind that makes a drapery read as tailored: a study, a library, a dining room or a bedroom, pinch pleat or ripplefold on a track or rod sized for the weight, lined, often blackout-lined.
Light and privacy
An opaque cloth, so privacy is complete when it is closed. The lining sets the light: a light-filtering sateen keeps a room glowing, an interlining adds body and quiet, a blackout lining turns a bedroom dark (lining guide).
Cloth and care
100% wool; 28 oz per linear yard (870 g per linear metre).
Limitations
Not for unshaded south or west glass on its own: the sun fades natural fibres, so a shade goes in front of it there. At 48 in a wide panel is made of joined widths; the seams sit inside the pleats. The weight needs a track or rod sized for it; a light decorative rod will bow. No NFPA 701 result in Holland & Sherry's data, so a condo common area or a commercial job that asks for it needs the cloth flame treated with a certificate, if Holland & Sherry can supply it that way, or another cloth.

What Holland & Sherry say about Cairn Plain
End use, in their words
"Upholstery, drapery, wall upholstery, soft goods and accessories", from Holland & Sherry's spec sheet.
Their drapery note
Drapery should hang before it is hemmed, so it can adjust to the climate of the room; every drapery should be lined, to block light and protect the face.
Flame tests
NFPA 701, the drapery flame test: not listed; upholstery tests on the sheet: BS 5852 Cigarette & Match TBD; Cal 117-2013 TBD.

How Cairn Plain becomes draperies in your home
Your designer specifies
Holland & Sherry sell to the trade, so the cloth is chosen and ordered by your designer, with the colour code and the sample in hand. Not working with a designer? Tell us; we can suggest a cloth we order ourselves.
We measure and give the yardage
We measure the windows, settle the style, the fullness and the lining, and work out the yardage on the width and the repeat, so the order to Holland & Sherry is right the first time.
We make and install
The cloth comes to our Fort Lauderdale workroom, where our five in-house seamstresses cut and sew the draperies, and our own installers hang them on the rod, track or motorized system the window calls for.
Where Cairn Plain works here
We have made Holland & Sherry wool up before: at the Ritz-Carlton Residences Miami Beach the designer's schedule called for two Holland & Sherry wool jacquards, made up as blackout drapery on Lutron Sivoia QS tracks, the reversible flannel hung with its lighter face outward as specified. Cairn Plain would be made the same way: lined, for an air-conditioned room, with a shade in front of it on bright glass.
For the same use, compare Cairn Plain with Fraser (wool straie, 55 in, 11 colourways), Musette (silk wool velvet, 55 in, 10 colourways) and Cuillin (wool jacquard, 50 in, 6 colourways).

Cairn Plain: frequently asked
How many colours does Holland & Sherry Cairn Plain come in?
One, Wheaten, on Holland & Sherry's site when we read it on October 7, 2026. It is listed on this page with its code; Holland & Sherry's photograph of it is on their own site, linked from the table.
Can I buy Cairn Plain from you?
No. Holland & Sherry sell to the trade, so your designer orders the cloth from them. We make it up and install it: we measure and work out the yardage, the cloth is sent to our Fort Lauderdale workroom, and our seamstresses cut and sew the draperies.
Is Cairn Plain fire rated for drapery?
Holland & Sherry's data gives no NFPA 701 result for it, only upholstery tests (BS 5852 Cigarette & Match; Cal 117-2013). For a residence that is not an issue; where a building asks for NFPA 701 on the drapery, ask your designer whether Holland & Sherry can supply it flame treated with a certificate, or choose another cloth.
Will Cairn Plain need seams?
Yes on most windows: at 48 in it runs up the roll, so a panel wider than one width is made of joined widths, with the seams hidden inside the pleats.
What does Cairn Plain cost made up as draperies?
The cloth is bought through your designer at Holland & Sherry's price, so our quote covers what we make and install: the fabrication, the lining, the track or rod and the installation, worked out from the measure. Ask for a workroom price with the button above and we come back with a figure, not a range.
