Holland & Sherry Drapery fabrics

Brushed wool jacquard, 53 in wide, in 6 colourways

Grampian is one of the Holland & Sherry cloths we make up as draperies: a brushed wool jacquard in their Highland Fling collection (46% wool, 30% cotton, 9% alpaca, 9% mohair, 6% polyamide, 53 in wide, made in France). The range runs to 6 colourways: Quartz, Woolly Willow, Flora Green, Fresh Water, Peatland and Purple Heath. Their spec sheet gives its end use as "Upholstery, drapery, wall upholstery, soft goods and accessories".

At 53 in it is cut up the roll like a conventional drapery cloth: a wide panel is made of joined widths, with each seam hidden inside a pleat or a ripplefold wave. The repeat is 8.8 in across, 14.1 in down, matched at every seam and across the windows of a room, so the yardage is worked out on the repeat rather than the finished size.

Wool brings weight, a soft hand and quiet, and it resists flame on its own; what it does not resist is the sun, which fades and weakens it, so it wants a lining and, on bright south and west glass, a shade in front of it. In a lived-in, air-conditioned house it is at home; in a house shut up for the summer, humidity is its risk (curtain fabric types). At 28 oz per linear yard (868 g per linear metre) it is a heavy cloth, so the track or rod is sized for the weight.

Their drapery note advises hanging the drapery before it is hemmed, so the cloth settles to the room, and lining every drapery, to block the light and protect the face.

Best Use & Limits

What Grampian does at the window, and what it does not

Best use

Grampian is a heavy cloth, the kind that makes a drapery read as tailored: a study, a library, a dining room or a bedroom, pinch pleat or ripplefold on a track or rod sized for the weight, lined, often blackout-lined.

Light and privacy

Closed, Grampian gives full privacy; how much light comes through is decided by the lining we sew behind it: light-filtering for living rooms, interlining for body and quiet, blackout for bedrooms (the lining guide).

Cloth and care

46% wool, 30% cotton, 9% alpaca, 9% mohair, 6% polyamide; 28 oz per linear yard (868 g per linear metre); Martindale 15,000 rubs.

Limitations

Not for unshaded south or west glass on its own: the sun fades natural fibres, so a shade goes in front of it there. At 53 in a wide panel is made of joined widths, and the repeat is matched at every seam, which costs yardage. The weight needs a track or rod sized for it; a light decorative rod will bow. No NFPA 701 result in Holland & Sherry's data, so a condo common area or a commercial job that asks for it needs the cloth flame treated with a certificate, if Holland & Sherry can supply it that way, or another cloth.

What Holland & Sherry say about Grampian

End use, in their words

"Upholstery, drapery, wall upholstery, soft goods and accessories", from Holland & Sherry's spec sheet.

Their drapery note

Drapery should hang before it is hemmed, so it can adjust to the climate of the room; every drapery should be lined, to block light and protect the face.

Flame tests

NFPA 701, the drapery flame test: not listed; upholstery tests on the sheet: BS 5852 Cigarette & Match meets requirements; Cal 117-2013 Pass.

Samples and custom colours

Custom colours from 100 m, by their sheet.

Good to know

The brushed finish runs downward, so every panel is cut the same way up.

Working With Holland & Sherry

How Grampian becomes draperies in your home

Your designer specifies

Holland & Sherry sell to the trade, so the cloth is chosen and ordered by your designer, with the colour code and the sample in hand. Not working with a designer? Tell us; we can suggest a cloth we order ourselves.

We measure and give the yardage

We measure the windows, settle the style, the fullness and the lining, and work out the yardage on the width and the repeat, so the order to Holland & Sherry is right the first time.

We make and install

The cloth comes to our Fort Lauderdale workroom, where our five in-house seamstresses cut and sew the draperies, and our own installers hang them on the rod, track or motorized system the window calls for.

South Florida

Where Grampian works here

In South Florida a wool drapery belongs in an air-conditioned room with the glass shaded: a study, a dining room, a bedroom with a blackout lining, a media room where weight and quiet matter. At the Ritz-Carlton Residences Miami Beach we made two Holland & Sherry wool jacquards up as blackout drapery on Lutron Sivoia QS tracks, to the designer's schedule; Grampian would be built the same way.

For the same use, compare Grampian with Musette (silk wool velvet, 55 in, 10 colourways), Cuillin (wool jacquard, 50 in, 6 colourways) and Glencoe (wool jacquard, 51 in, 6 colourways).

Grampian: frequently asked

How many colours does Holland & Sherry Grampian come in?

6 colourways on Holland & Sherry's site when we read it on October 7, 2026: Quartz, Woolly Willow, Flora Green, Fresh Water, Peatland and Purple Heath. Every one is listed on this page with its code; Holland & Sherry's photographs of each are on their own site, linked from the table.

Can I buy Grampian from you?

No. Holland & Sherry sell to the trade, so your designer orders the cloth from them. We make it up and install it: we measure and work out the yardage, the cloth is sent to our Fort Lauderdale workroom, and our seamstresses cut and sew the draperies.

Do you match the Grampian repeat?

Always. Holland & Sherry give the repeat as 8.8 in across, 14.1 in down; we match it at every seam and from window to window, so the yardage your designer orders is worked out on the repeat.

Will Grampian need seams?

Yes on most windows: at 53 in it runs up the roll, so a panel wider than one width is made of joined widths, with the seams hidden inside the pleats and the repeat matched at each seam.

What does Grampian cost made up as draperies?

The cloth is bought through your designer at Holland & Sherry's price, so our quote covers what we make and install: the fabrication, the lining, the track or rod and the installation, worked out from the measure. Ask for a workroom price with the button above and we come back with a figure, not a range.
